Founded by Joseph Smith (picture at right) in the U.S. in the 1820's, it includes an "alternative history" of Jesus. Because it includes Jesus in its story of origin, adherents claim to be Christian but many Christians think of it as a cult and not Christian. It has about 14 million followers and would not merit any attention except that it dominates politics in the U.S. North West and produced a candidate for President in 2012, Mitt Romney.
Initially believing in polygamy and with strong racist elements, it has evolved over the years and now it is simply misogynist, domineering of its members and has theology that is difficult to believe unless you are born to it. But then that's true of most religions.
