Definition of God PDF Print E-mail
Written by John Draper
Saturday, 02 January 2010 06:09

What exactly is god? What do atheists NOT believe in?  And for that matter, is there a definition of god that would suit everyone, theists, atheists and agnostics?  One definition used is that god is a being who is omnipotent (all-powerful), omniscient (knows everything) and omnibenevolent (is good).  But such a definition of god is clearly inadequate - an all-knowing  god would know about all the evil in the world and being good would want to stop it and being omnipotent would be able to do so.   But he doesn't so either our definition of "good" is wrong or the definition of god is wrong.  Either way, it's not useful.

Atheists can't think for themselves PDF Print E-mail

Edward Current proves that being a Christian requires constant thinking, while being an atheist sheep does not. This explains why atheists are the dumbest people God ever created!

Watch this video when you need to smile - but don't look for any deep theology.

Humanist and Atheist Holidays PDF Print E-mail
Written by Bill Broderick
Thursday, 31 December 2009 13:00

Everybody loves a holiday. Today holidays are both religious and secular, but as the term 'holiday' implies, they were once holy days, days connected with various religious traditions. Christmas, Hanukkah, and Ramadan are examples of these while New Year's, Civic Holiday and Labour Day are examples of secular holidays.

What of atheists, humanists, and agnostics? What holidays do they celebrate?

As might be expected, the freethinkers of the world do not, if they can avoid it, celebrate 'holy' days. Christmas, for instance, has no more significance for an atheist than the birth of Zeus might have for a Christian. But we do have persons and events that we believe are worthy of celebration and many of us go to considerable lengths to do so. Here is a list based on that published by one humanist group:

Video of fight against theocracy in Iran PDF Print E-mail
Written by John Draper
Thursday, 31 December 2009 06:00

Young people in Iran are fighting against the theocratic tyranny of the Imams and the regime they support.  Clearly the youth are not anti-Islam yet Iran's dictators are using god as a reason to kill, jail and clamp down on demonstrations.  The recent death of an Imam who agreed that Iran should not be a theocracy has been a trigger for the latest demonstrations.  You may have seen pictures of the violence in the news media - but one of the best ways to get a message across is with pictures and a song.

Why does anyone believe in psychics? PDF Print E-mail
Written by John Draper
Wednesday, 30 December 2009 09:00

Craig & Jane, UK based "psychics", made 10 predictions in 2008 for 2009.  They do this each year because there are people who believe them despite the fact that they are plain wrong - other than the occasional "hit" through luck.  Many so-called psychics make year-end predictions yet they are always the same mix of mostly wrong.  The "ability" they claim to have has never been proved - in fact James Randi has challenged all comers to demonstrate psychic ability and has offered $1M to anyone who can prove scientifically that they have such powers. (More on Randi here.  See also the related articles listed).

So why do people believe?  It's the same reason that people want to believe in god or a "higher power" - people want to believe in immortality, they want to believe that the human mind is more than just a flesh and blood brain and we all want to believe we are more than just an advanced animal.  We like to think we have a spiritual side that is somehow detachable from the rest of us.

God Delusion - the song PDF Print E-mail
Written by John Draper
Tuesday, 29 December 2009 17:10

I love it when a great idea becomes a song that everyone's dancing to. God Delusion music and lyrics by STYVYN,  was recorded in October 2009 and hopefully that's what will happen.   A popular song is a great way to spread the message - and what's the message?  That the God Delusion hurts.

It's an electronic dance tune featuring Markella and blasts religions of all stripes for their contribution to war, violence and failure to deliver on their promise of peace.

Why people do not listen PDF Print E-mail
Written by John Draper
Tuesday, 29 December 2009 04:06

Do you believe everything  anyone tells you? No. But you believe your doctor, and when you were a child, you believed your parents and teachers.  But you are sceptical of salesmen and politicians.  Why the difference?  I think it's because we are inclined to believe authority figures - like our parents when we were less than five.  It's a natural behaviour.

And because we were told at a very young age about religion and we were told that the priests (or similar) were the experts and had all the answers, we believed that too.  The priests, rabbis, ministers, imams became the authority figures whose word is accepted without question.  There are other authority figures who are accepted as well.

News Update

Sept 8, 2010

1. I just received my copy of the new book by Stephen Hawking that everyone is talking about - I'm a slow reader so it will be a while before I comment on it!

2. The Koran burning planned in Florida by the nutty pastor is in the same boat as the mosque at ground zero - both legal but both are stupid deliberate antagonizing of the religion you don't happen to believe in.

Quote of the Day

A quote from Catch-22 by Joesph Heller - from the web site Unreasonable Faith
"And don't tell me God works in mysterious ways,"..... Why in the world did He ever create pain?... What a colossal, immortal blunderer!... His sheer incompetence is almost staggering" and lots more - here. Priceless!
