If you start reading the bible and don't already know that cruelty is wrong - the bible won't help. There are countless examples of cruelty in the bible - mostly in the Old Testament. And the idea that the bible simply represents the thinking or of the ability of mankind at the time is not true either. Buddhist and Greek philosopher thinking at around the same time were condemning cruelty so humans were capable of better things even then.
But is the New Testament better? No. It clearly supported slavery and the concept that women were inferior and subservient to men. Although this attitude to women may originate in our biology and therefore predates religion, the bible supports and perpetuates this behaviour.

There are still many Muslims who find it difficult to accept the separation of mosque and state. They dream of establishing Islamic theocratic states with Quran as the basis of the constitution as they believe Islam to be a complete system encompassing all aspects of life— personal, social, religious as well as political. They are thrilled to see a secular Pakistan transforming into the Islamic Republic of Pakistan.
Many secular people wonder which interpretation of Quran would be considered valid for an Islamic state, because followers of each sect believe that their interpretation is the correct one. When we read Muslim scholars like Abul ala Maududi, Ghulam Ahmed Pervaiz, Abul Kalam Azad, Mirza Ghulam Ahmed and many others, we are struck by their differences of opinion.

Yeah, that's the one. Well I kinda been trying to get next to her, y'know? But she goes to that church down on Pitt St. all the time. Got chattin' her up t'other day and she invited me to go with her. I figured it'd be a good way to get next to her so I went along with it. Man you wouldn't believe the story them folks got!! All about how ever'thin' got here, 'n stuff. Some weird! You really want to know? OK, here goes nuthin'…..
So, lemme see now if I can kinda explain how it all works… Y'see, way back a long time ago, way before my ol' man was born; maybe even before my Uncle Max was born, there was this really heavy Dude. He could, like, do all kinds of really weird shit, Y'know?

This time, PC means Politically Correct. Apparently some atheists are slamming Pat for being insensitive to Islam. But as he says, atheists normally use reason to analyse arguments yet some let Political Correctness over-ride their powers of reason. They can't see or accept the reality. If an argument about the irrationality of religion can be applied to Christians, why not to Muslims? Fortunately, Pat is wrong if he thinks that all atheists are politically correct - I would be offended if I was called politically correct.
I suspect that some people who call themselves liberals or left-wing (but aren't really), think that Christianity is wrong because some of its members are extremist about issues such as homosexuality, abortion, women's rights etc. They reject the extremism and the religion which inspired it. But these same people (pseudo-liberals) feel that Muslims are a minority and under-privileged so should be left alone (overlooking the fact that this patronizing view would offend these same Muslims). They fail to distinguish between the individuals and their religion. They fail to see that the evils that are done in the name of Islam really are inspired by that religion.

In simple terms, there are two kinds of people: those who think like adults and those who think like children. When we are very young, we cannot yet think for ourselves and cannot know everything so we learn from parents. When we become teenagers, we learn from teachers and peers. But as we mature and become adult, we question what we have learned and decide for ourselves what is right and wrong. Most things we "know" are obviously right - fire is hot, water is wet, the sun comes up in the east etc. Other things are complex; for example people are complex and are not all the same. Some things we choose to not question - this often includes religion and many things we learned such as racism and attitudes to sex. But if we choose to not question some things, for those issues, we are choosing to be like a child. Why decide for ourselves on some things but not others?

Why don't atheists and sites like Cobourg Atheist leave religion alone? It's just an idea, a philosophy; it's not a marauding army or a criminal gang. Even though violence is often justified by it, the extremists who do that would probably find some other excuse if religion did not exist - so why pick on religion? I think we can all agree that in most (but not all) cases, there are good intentions behind most religions and their teachings. They want to give a purpose to our lives; they want men to live in peace (as long as they agree!); they want society to live by a code of ethics that ensures everyone benefits. So why disturb something that has good intentions?

Religious people believe that God created/designed the world and that he knows everything we do. That makes him all-knowing (omniscient) and all-powerful (omnipotent). Many theists also say that goodness comes from God - that without God there is no reason for anyone to be good. Apart from the fact that this is simply not true as well as being offensive since atheists are just as ethical as theists - it is also obvious that God does not care about goodness. How else can theists explain the abundance of evil in the world?

News Update
Sept 8, 2010
1. I just received my copy of the new book by Stephen Hawking that everyone is talking about - I'm a slow reader so it will be a while before I comment on it!
2. The Koran burning planned in Florida by the nutty pastor is in the same boat as the mosque at ground zero - both legal but both are stupid deliberate antagonizing of the religion you don't happen to believe in.
Quote of the Day
A quote from Catch-22 by Joesph Heller - from the web site Unreasonable Faith "And don't tell me God works in mysterious ways,"..... Why in the world did He ever create pain?... What a colossal, immortal blunderer!... His sheer incompetence is almost staggering" and lots more - here. Priceless! |
