Religions have multitudes of venerated people that they have elevated to the status of saints. I'm sure almost any reader of this column can rattle off a dozen or so names with no problem at all. Within Christianity we have Saints Joseph and Mary, the apostles Matthew, Mark, Luke John, etc., Joan of Arc, Mother Theresa, and many, many more. What about humanists? Are there any humanist saints?
Humanism does not create saints. There have been, however, many very highly respected people within the humanist movement. We don't venerate or worship them but we certainly hold them in high regard. If we did have saints, the following persons past and present, I feel, would be among the many who would be so honoured.

There's been a lot of news about priests abusing children but there is another dimension. Many priests cannot live with celibacy so have secret affairs with a woman in the parish. In one report in the U.K. Guardian, it is estimated that there are currently 1000 people living now in Britain and Ireland whose fathers are priests. Many of these priests acknowledge their children to a limited extent yet must keep it quiet from most people so they can continue their career - or as they would say "Continue with god's work". [See this article in the UK Guardian]. One problem with this of course is that these priests are being hypocritical. They preach a sexual morality that they don't follow themselves. They hear confessions and forgive the sins of others doing just what they are doing - having sex outside marriage.

Why are Muslims so devout? Why are they mostly so irrational? Moderate Muslims might argue that they are not irrational but they are at least unable to spot enough of the errors in the Qur'an to reject Islam. Ex-Muslim Mumin Salih, writing on Islam-Watch says that he was once asked "How do Muslim intellectuals read the Qur'an without noticing its obvious errors? How do they read about Muhammad's evident murders and stand with the murderer? How do they read about his wars and stand with him, the aggressor?"
His answer is that it has to do with the most extensive brainwashing process a human can ever be subjected to. The Islamization of the Muslim mind is a process that starts immediately after birth and continues throughout his/her life. After birth, an adult holds the child and recites the azan, the call for prayers, directly into ears of the newborn. The moral of the practice is to prime the child's hearing with the blessed names of Allah and Muhammad. Indeed, that call for prayers soon becomes the most frequently heard sound by Muslim children. The azan is repeated five times a day in every mosque in the area. If there are ten mosques in the area, which is common nowadays, the azan would be heard, through the loud speakers, fifty times a day. In addition, the newborn's ears will get used to hearing the endless recitations of the Qur'an that go on almost continuously.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper (and others) have said that it's individuals and not the religion of Islam to blame for terror such as those recently arrested in Ottawa. So why is it that only Muslims are terrorists? Yes I know, Northern Ireland has had non-Muslim terrorists but not Canada and very rarely in other places. Why don't the politicians pause and think for a second? Perhaps there's something about Islam that encourages terror? Maybe we should take into account the fact that the Qur'an and many imams preach about the need to kill infidels and apostates (converts)? Harper, Obama and others are dead wrong - Islam the religion is breeding terrorists and not anything else. They should check into the situation. Islam is not like other religions - at least not yet.

We are told that Jesus loves us so much he died for us so we could be forgiven our sins. But to get this "benefit" we have to believe; we have to declare that we are Christian! So if I say I believe in Jesus, that he loves me, I can sin as much as I want and get forgiven? There is no retribution, no punishment as long as I continue to believe? I know, Catholics add the caveat that we must be sorry for our sins. That's easy enough, a bad sin comes with a built in feeling of guilt! But when it comes to forgiving others, Christians don't - not really. They still insist on having a Police force to catch criminals and courts to put bad guys in jail. Have you ever heard of a Christian in court accused of (e.g.) fraud who says "God forgives me, so you should too"? Has never happened; or if it has, the person was assumed to be deranged. And if a court did accept such a plea, there would be chaos with no crime prevention.

The swirling controversy over the Ground Zero mosque obscures what should be obvious, at least since 9/11, about the behavioural pattern of radical Islamists engaged in stealth jihad, or “lawfare,” to advance their strategic interest of securing concessions by Western governments for Sharia.
In generating this controversy, and then pushing hard on it by insisting on the constitutionally protected right of freedom of religion to build this mosque in the vicinity of Ground Zero in New York City, Islamists behind the project have masterfully succeeded in greatly dividing Americans as the ninth anniversary of 9/11 approaches.
What we are witnessing here is radical Islamists once again, as in the Danish cartoon controversy — or the controversy surrounding the wearing by some Muslim women of niqabs or full-face coverings, or the push for censorship on grounds of hate speech — taking hold of the legal-political framework of liberal democracy to secure grounds for their anti-liberal agenda of advancing acceptance of Sharia in the West.

As Sam Harris says, there is no word for not being an astrologer - so why is there a word for not being a theist? Labelling people who don't believe in something does not make them members of a religion. For atheism to be a religion, it would have to have some kind of philosophical position and some content - but it doesn't. And the word itself can be applied to almost everyone - all religious people are atheists about everyone else's god. I would go further than Harris and say that since almost everyone rejects parts of what their pastor, priest, imam says, then there are about as many religions and versions of god as there are people (see Custom religions).
Atheists are accused of being dogmatic and arrogant, just like religions are with their dogmas. But for an atheist to be accused of being dogmatic for calling the bible ridiculous is the pot calling the kettle black - any Christian would say Zeus is ridiculous . And "people of faith" claim humility while at the same time they claim to know more about cosmology, physics, chemistry and palaeontology than any scientist - talk about arrogance. I'd be more inclined to accept what people like Stephen Hawking say on Cosmology - he has never accepted creationism nor tried to reconcile his work with Genesis.

News Update
Sept 8, 2010
1. I just received my copy of the new book by Stephen Hawking that everyone is talking about - I'm a slow reader so it will be a while before I comment on it!
2. The Koran burning planned in Florida by the nutty pastor is in the same boat as the mosque at ground zero - both legal but both are stupid deliberate antagonizing of the religion you don't happen to believe in.
Quote of the Day
A quote from Catch-22 by Joesph Heller - from the web site Unreasonable Faith "And don't tell me God works in mysterious ways,"..... Why in the world did He ever create pain?... What a colossal, immortal blunderer!... His sheer incompetence is almost staggering" and lots more - here. Priceless! |
