Pat Condell’s latest video is not talking about Muslims but instead about Christians and he starts by highlighting one of my pet peeves – that Christians pick and choose what they believe about god and Jesus. If they don’t like gays – then of course Jesus doesn’t like them. In fact Jesus can be whoever we want him to be – you could say he is a customised Jesus. He is configured to suit us – maybe he reads our minds and being an agreeable person, just happens to agree with whatever we think. Very handy. But if Christians can create their own version – why can’t we? Starting with what is said in the Bible, it’s clear that Jesus would not tolerate any televangelist – to quote Pat: “…Jesus would be hard pressed not to slap him around a room and kick him down a flight of stairs”. Just like he did to the Pharisees.
Instead of feeling one with the earth, Pat says that the clergy want you to feel apart from nature and not a part of nature. That way, you will be uncertain and the promise of salvation from your evil built-in sinfulness will have more appeal. I have to agree with Pat that it seems that Clergy don’t want to empower you, they want to weaken you with their talk of original sin and the need to be saved. Overall, the Jesus of most religious clergy is a swindle – he is portrayed as someone very different from the Bible.
By my experience, a few Christians do get it right – they see the teachings of Jesus to be about love. They reject all the talk about sin and hell and demons and hating gays and the need for salvation. But by the time they get to this thinking, they have pretty much rejected all the existing religions and their clergy.
