Rowan Atkinson - Amazing Jesus

Rowan Atkinson is mostly famous for his performances as Mr. Bean but he is also a stand-up comic.  He has a few sketches where he makes fun of religion but does not push his views.  It is reported that he was raised as a Christian but now calls himself humanist so it is no surprise that he does well at making fun of the miracle of turning water to wine at Cana.  While he’s at it, he also sends up Anglican ministers giving sermons!

Have you ever seen a good magician?  Mostly you can’t figure out how they do their illusions.  When you think about it, there are three possible explanations for miracles – especially ones like the water into wine thing:

  1. Perhaps the performer was a god or had access to a god for doing otherwise impossible things - but you have to believe in the impossible for this to be credible.
  2. Since the stories were written well after they are supposed to have happened, maybe they were invented or exaggerated.
  3. Perhaps miracles (at least some of them) were magic illusions – as Rowan Atkinson relates, you’d think one of the Cana wedding attendees would have asked:  “Do you do children’s parties?”
