The movie Collision premieres on Oct 28, 2009 in New York (Official movie site). It’s a documentary featuring debates between Evangelical Christian Pastor Douglas Wilson and Christopher Hitchens and should prove to be entertaining and hopefully educational. However, as pointed out in Joy Behar’s talk show (on CNN’s Headline News), each side will be convinced that “they won”. Debates of this nature rarely change people’s minds – the best that can be expected is a better understanding of why anyone would believe the contrary position!
However Joy Behar did a great job of interviewing and did manage to ask some leading questions like “Does anyone still seriously believe that Noah had all those animals on his boat?” And Pastor Wilson responded “As a Christian I believe the bible” so he virtually said outright that he did in fact believe that impossibility!
Christopher Hitchens clearly won the arguments - but then you expected me to say that! Both men were civil and did not show any sign of bad feeling to the other. I would guess they have respect for each other - which one would always hope for. For more on what Hitchens thinks of his debating opponents plus more of his opinion of Collision, go here (Slate).
However, if you want to know what the movie is about but don’t want to spend a couple of hours on it, here is a summary in 8½ minutes.
Hosted on Cobourg Atheist.
