When a child is born, he/she comes with genes that determine many things - including race, appearance, personality, intelligence, sexual orientation and more. But children are not born with knowledge, beliefs, culture or religion. These come primarily from their parents and also from others they come in contact with. If their parents are smart, they will want to teach their children moral values such as the golden rule as well as tolerance and respect for the beliefs of others. They will usually want to also teach their culture and beliefs which might include a religion. It's unrealistic to expect parents to teach their children anything contrary to their beliefs. But if the parents' beliefs include tolerance and respect for others, they will teach that the beliefs and religion are "theirs" but that other people have other cultures and religions which must be respected. Lastly, they will teach their children to use their reason to decide about anything new they may come across.
If they do all that, the child will eventually grow up and realise that they can choose what culture they prefer, what beliefs they can accept. The problem with all this arises when parents teach their children that they should NOT respect or tolerate others. If they teach their children that everyone else is not only mistaken in their belief but that they will suffer or should be made to suffer because of it. Evangelical Christians are taught by parents or teachers or clerics that everyone not agreeing with them will end up in hell or if they are of the gentler persuasion, will miss out on heaven/paradise. Muslims are taught that not only will others suffer but if they change their religion, they should be killed or at least punished. (Some Muslims ignore this part of the Qu'ran). Where is the tolerance and respect for the beliefs of others? Non-existent for these groups.
In addition, these fundamentalist religious people go further and integrate their beliefs into their culture and their very way of life so that to change or choose beliefs for oneself involves rejecting the whole world around you. They teach and encourage the idea that not only is emotion a good part of your life but that it should rule your life so that any rational arguments will be ignored. This upbringing is the very opposite of accepting others as equal.
Fundamentalist religions are clearly incompatible with tolerance and respect for others. They are intrinsically intolerant.
Another thought, if you are intrinsically intolerant, you do not respect other opinions or the wishes of others. That would make them unhappy and rejecting of the idea of democracy since this relies on everyone accepting the opinion of the majority.
