Islamic Culture can encourage homosexuality

It's well known that men in prison often abuse other inmates sexually - but did you know that in places like Afghanistan, men often turn to other men for sex?  Young British soldiers in Afghanistan were concerned because it seemed that they were being propositioned by local Afghanistan men.  A study was done and it reports that: "Older, powerful men boosted their social status by keeping boys as sexual playthings and the practice was celebrated in song and dance".  This was because: "Strict separation of men and women, coupled with poverty and the significant expense of getting married, contributed to young men turning to each other for sexual companionship." (See reference at end of article).

Although the report did not want the subject to be dismissed, it did not go very far in determining where this culture came from.  However, it seems clear that it is a by-product of strict Islamic edicts about keeping men and women separate.  Up until very recently, the Taliban even opposed the idea that girls should be educated - they wanted them treated as a chattel - something to be traded and fully under the control of the male population.  It's not only the Taliban and Afghanistan (and parts of Pakistan) that have this problem - all strict Muslims insist that women be treated in a way that the rest of the world would describe as primitive and unacceptable.

It's not surprising that if men cannot get sex with women that they turn to other ways of satisfying themselves.  It would not be so bad if they just went to men their own age but according to the British report, they are likely to look to young men or even boys.

The head in the sand attitude is not likely to go away - prominent Muslim leaders like Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad deny there are any gays in his country.  He recently said "In Iran we don't have homosexuals like in your country - in Iran we do not have this phenomenon."  In Saudi Arabia - and probably other Islamic countries - sodomy has a death sentence so we can be sure that no gays have come out of the closet in those countries.

To be fair, it is not that long ago that being gay in Canada was illegal and  even punishable by death up to 1869.  It was 1967 when Trudeau initiated making it legal between consenting adults.

But the ironic thing is that Muslims try to deny that homosexuality exists in their culture yet their very way of life, their religious edicts and their culture, actually encourage it.  They probably have more homosexual acts in their countries than elsewhere in the World.
